The Briarpatch is one of Canada’s oldest uninterrupted independent publications founded in 1973. The subheading is, “Fighting the War on Error”. This cover was commissioned for their education issue. I was going for that line between vulnerability and put-on street tough.



Sub-structure is King

The charming Katie Mathy at the Atlantic Monthly commissioned a piece for their fiction issue on the value of the imagination in essay writing. In it Tim O’brien discusses the work of Argentinean author, Luis Borges, specifically, The Aleph. This is a point in space where all things of the universe, both past, present and future come into view. The piece was an excersice in substructure. The illustration above shows the golden mean supered over the finished illo. The below is the illo as it appears in the magazine.
